750 Million in Asia-Pacific Still Excluded From Economy – But Thai Businesses Are Starting to Change

The UN hosted APFSD 2026 in Bangkok, pushing companies to seriously embed disability inclusion into ESG frameworks. The theme “Putting Disability Inclusion in ESG” emphasized that the Social pillar must measure workforce representation and digital accessibility — not just green CSR gestures.

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance standards. Including disability means businesses must report real metrics on employment and digital access, not just surface-level charity for public image.

Over 750 million people with disabilities across Asia-Pacific remain economically excluded. Yet research shows serious corporate hiring could grow regional GDP by 1-7%. Thai companies like Central Group, ERGO, IHG, and Allianz Ayudhya are already stepping up as leaders.

In Thailand, only 40,000 people with disabilities were employed (2023-24) — with nearly 390,000 still unemployed. The Stock Exchange is rolling out ESG disclosure rules, and new equality legislation is being drafted.

Strong policy and committed action will absolutely close gaps and reduce inequality. This is what true sustainable support looks like.
