Airbus unveiled the Airspace U Suite cabin concept at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg on 14 April 2026. The system enables wheelchair users to remain seated in their own wheelchairs aboard the aircraft. Engineer Dirk Thalheim, who uses a wheelchair, conducted a real flight test on an A350-900 in March 2026, with his chair locked to the cabin floor. Testing so far has been limited to the cruise phase only. Currently, over 10,000 wheelchairs are damaged each year at U.S. airports. Airbus expects to deliver this system around 2032.
