Have you ever tripped, stumbled, or had an accident on the sidewalk?
Now imagine facing that every single day.
Across society, countless voices complain about sidewalks that are unusable, dirty, inconvenient. Some even call them dangerous. Even ministers have spoken about how sidewalks have been obstacles for people with disabilities and older adults.
Picture sidewalks that are smooth and level. Wide enough. Free of obstacles. Walking without fear, breathing easily, never worrying about falling.
From fear comes relief.
From relief comes confidence.
Good sidewalks must create good feelings within us:
— The feeling of safety
— The feeling of being accepted
— The sense of being welcomed
— The sense that this city has space for us to walk, inviting us to walk
— The sense that we are part of this city
I believe “everyone” wants to see good sidewalks like this everywhere.
Have you ever had an accident on the sidewalk?
