U.S. Government Now Enforcing WCAG 2.1
The U.S. Department of Justice is now enforcing WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance on all government websites. Major cities must comply by April 2026; smaller municipalities by April 2027. Violations carry penalties up to 3.9 million baht ($115,000+). Shockingly, nearly 4,000 digital accessibility lawsuits were filed in 2024 alone.
WCAG 2.1 is the global standard that enables people with disabilities to access websites equally. The U.S. has elevated it to mandatory law, similar to the EU’s European Accessibility Act.
