Yesterday’s train-bus collision at Makkasan crossing wasn’t the first, and it won’t be the last unless we fix this systemically.
Here’s what the State Railway of Thailand’s data (April 2025) tells me: We have 2,639 railway crossings nationwide. Of those, 1,149 have boom barriers. Only 6 have flashing lights AND sensors. 173 have warning signs only. 173 are underpasses. And critically — 621 are illegal crossings with zero protection at all.
That’s a statistic, this can’t be accepted.
What about government policy? The Department of Rail Transport has a 9-strategy, 3-phase, 5-sector plan. The Ministry of Transport has open data. But progress is too slow. Those 621 unprotected crossings are time bombs waiting to go off.
I ask everyone: If we’re building new rail systems, why are we still creating crossings at all? New systems must have zero crossings. Old systems need urgent fixes. Every person deserves to travel safely.
