Announcements blare through the train, but people who are deaf or hard of hearing hear nothing. SiLViA (Sign Language Virtual Assistant) — an AI screen that translates spoken announcements into real-time sign language. The display shows a signing avatar alongside text, like having an interpreter at every single station. They’ve been testing it at Chinatown Station for over 8 months now.
SBS Transit + startup FingerDance + SADeaf developed this technology that converts audio announcements into sign language on screen, complete with train times and exit information. Users say they feel significantly more independent — no longer needing to rely on others to tell them where they are. Service has begun on the North East Line, with plans to expand nationwide.
Thailand 🇹🇭 still has very limited support systems for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. This is the challenge we urgently need to develop — so everyone receives information equally.
