The Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA) launched the 6th edition of its Code on Barrier-Free Accessibility in Buildings, effective November 1, 2025. This latest update introduces several new standards: larger elevators that accommodate powered wheelchairs, dedicated rest areas for seniors, and lactation rooms required in buildings over 5,000 square meters.
What’s striking is Singapore’s pattern—reviewing and upgrading accessibility regulations every 5 to 6 years consistently over two decades. Meanwhile, Thailand 🇹🇭 still operates under its 2005 Ministry Regulation, amended just once in 2021—a gap of 16 years between updates.
New mandates in Singapore’s code include: buildings must connect without physical barriers, hearing loop signage for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and wider accessible restrooms. None of these requirements exist in Thai law.
Singapore and numerous countries worldwide revise their disability-related laws frequently. This demonstrates clear commitment to building genuine equality.
